Initialize the DC_MOTOR in the main application, start the DC Motor, read an analog potentiometer with ADC. And use that reading to control the motor speed in the main loop of the system.

The speed of the DC series motor can also be controlled by varying the armature resistance, armature voltage. Consequently, the following methods are adopted for controlling the speed.

An easy and instant way to do this is to replace the R2 resistor with a potentiometer, and additionally add two diodes in the circuit.

So if i were to modify the motor speed control using arduino to run 2x motors (in parallel) that ran @ 12v .4A on one pwm channel, what would the capacitor rating and transistor rating have to be? would an NTE293 npn transistor be sufficent? And if so, does R1 have to be changed at all?

With some viable alternatives available now, it’s becoming hard for a BDC motor to stay competitive in high-power electronics.

Usually the R1 resistance is much smaller than the resistance of the potentiometer, for example, 1K compared to 100K of the potentiometer. In that way we have 99% control over the charging and discharging resistance in the circuit.

The speed of rotation can be controlled by controlling the rate at which the phases change. We use the name “120-degree conducting control” to the seis-mode control method described here.

PWM control is a very commonly used method for controlling the power across loads. This method is very easy to implement and has high efficiency. PWM signal is essentially a high frequency square wave ( typically greater than 1KHz).

After some internet searches, I found various datasheets from different manufacturers, leading to some confusion due to the different models available. If you have a motor from an authenticated manufacturer, refer to their datasheet for accurate specifications.

Table 1 lists the typical types of sensors used in these motors. Different types sensors are used for different methods of control. Hall elements, with signal inputs spaced at 60º, are best for motors that use 120-degree conductingcontrol—where all that is necessary is to determine which phase to energize.

In this tutorial, we’ll be discussing DC motor speed control with STM32 PWM and L293D H-bridge motor driver. I’ll also show you the DC_MOTOR library (driver) that I’ve developed for STM32 microcontrollers and discuss how it works and how it’s been built in this way. And we’ll create 3 different example projects with STM32 uC and DC motors.

Designing a high current DC motor controller schematic, we used an IGBT that combines features of power MOSFETs and bipolar switches. It provides a high level of current and is well suited for complex power electronics systems.
